1. Seal Potential Entry Points: Inspect and close gaps around doors, windows, and other openings. Due to their extremely small size, complete exclusion may not be possible, but sealing obvious points reduces access.
2. Establish a Vegetation-Free Perimeter: Remove grasses, weeds, and other vegetation immediately adjacent to the building foundation. Maintaining a bare or gravel strip of 18–24 inches around the perimeter can help deter clover mites.
3. Trim Vegetation Near the Home: Prune tree branches and shrubs that touch the exterior walls to prevent mites from easily reaching the structure.
4. Apply Outdoor Miticides When Necessary: For recurring infestations, consider treating the foundation with a miticide labeled for outdoor use. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure safe and effective application.
5. Select Mite-Resistant Plants: Incorporate plant species that are less attractive to clover mites near the foundation, such as geraniums, chrysanthemums, marigolds, and salvia, or shrubs like barberry, juniper, spruce, and yew.
6. Manage Lawn Fertilization: Avoid excessive application of nitrogen to lawns, as high nitrogen levels may exacerbate clover mite problems.
By implementing these strategies, homeowners can significantly reduce the likelihood of clover mite invasions while maintaining a healthy and attractive landscape.
